About Me

Paddy playing piano in London

When I started playing piano at the age of 12, I soon discovered I have a huge passion for music. After a number of years of piano lessons I went on to obtain a music degree, specialising in music education in my final year. Since graduating from the University of West London in 2006 I have been pursuing and enjoying a career in music, both performing and teaching. Since 2009 I have focused mostly on teaching piano as I find great satisfaction in passing on my love for music to others.

I was brought up in a small village in Gloucestershire where I had many interests as a youngster. I was a very keen cricketer, footballer, rugby player and golfer. From an early age I had a huge passion for music. When I started piano lessons I was lucky enough to have a teacher who made me want to play. He would always let me play what I was interested in but at the same time help me understand the theory behind it. After a few years of playing the piano, I started playing the guitar and singing too.

At the age of eighteen I moved to London and attended Vocaltech singing college, where I obtained a Bachelor of music degree. This was a great experience where I was surrounded by talented musicians and introduced to all different kinds of music. From here I went on to play a variety of gigs, of which some of the highlights were performing at the Victoria and Albert museum in a huge choir and singing the bass part in the orchestra of Damon Albarn’s ‘Monkey: Journey to the West’ opera.

I still perform occasionally but in recent years teaching has taken over as my main source of income because I love the satisfaction of seeing my students improve. I have been teaching part time, amongst other things, for around six years and full time for the last three years. With this experience I have quickly learned how to adapt to different styles and paces of tuition that different students require.

I love to see as much live music as I can. I go to all sorts of gigs, from club nights to classical concerts and of course my favourite, jazz. Although I have a vast knowledge of myriad music genres, jazz is most definitely my first passion when it comes to the piano. I am hugely influenced by some jazz piano masters such as Bill Evans and Oscar Peterson. I’m hoping to be able to play as well as them one day!
